Avril diberikan nama tersebut karena dalam bahasa Ferancis dari bulan april. Ayahnya bernama Jean-Claude Lavigne, ibunya bernama Judith-Rosanne. Avril mempunyai saudara laki-laki dan perempuan yaitu Matthew & Michelle. Sampai sekarang, Avril sudah mempunyai 4 album dan 17 singles. Karirnya dimulai dari penyanyi gereja setelah menyanyikan lagu Jesus Loves Me dan saat memenagkan kontes menyanyi di sebuah radio dan berduet dengan penyanyi Kanada yaitu Shania Twain.
